The gardens and parks of Tuscany, and of Lucca in particular, are full of camellias from the 19th century. Since their arrival at the end of the 18th century, camellias have enjoyed great success as ornamental plants both for their adaptability to our climate and for their beauty due to their evergreen foliage and spectacular flowering. In Tuscany there are particularly numerous cultivars (man-made varieties) also imported abroad.

THE COMPITESE CAMELLIETUM
The pride of the Borgo delle Camelie is the Camellietum Compitese which, on an area of 10,000 square meters, houses 1,000 cultivars of camellias dating from the 1800s to the present day. Due to its unique characteristics, it has been awarded the title of “Garden of Excellence”, recognized in 40 gardens around the world, 14 of which in Europe.

The Camellietum offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the genus Camellia from a botanical point of view, its propagation, its history and its diffusion in the Capannori area from 1800 to today. The intent is to ensure its protection and conservation over time.
