Cathedral Music Organ Concert- English choir Ely Consort

The English choir Ely Consort in San Martino for ‘Music in the Cathedral’ Appointment on Friday (July 15) with a tribute to Mascagni and Puccini and to the classics of Mozart and Bach.

Really interesting program with a clear homage to the most famous Tuscan authors, Puccini and Mascagni (the choir is in fact on tour here with us), the presence of two classics such as Mozart and Bach and for the rest a whole series of famous contemporary authors who they dedicated a significant space of their compositions to polyphony and sacred music.

It will be an opportunity to listen to true masterpieces of contemporary music. Music by Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) Easter Hymn will be performed

The Ely Consort is a chamber choir that includes about 40 voices, and performs music in a wide variety of styles; and places. Ely Consort has built a high reputation for performing over the past 30 years, making it known as one of the UK’s leading chamber choirs. Matthew Rudd, has been music director of Ely Consort since 2002 and over the past sixteen years has helped to establish the choir’s reputation as one of the foremost English chamber choirs.

He conducted the choir in a vast repertoire ranging from the Renaissance period to the present day; major performances have included Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Mass in Time of War, Brahms’ German Requiem and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Matthew also conducted the first performances of commissioned works from Ely Consort, including a hymn written by Will Todd for the 25th anniversary of the choir in Ely Cathedral. Matthew is a music “reader” at Oxford University, where he sang in the Oxford Bach Choir and in the choirs of Exeter College and Queen’s College.

He is currently director of music at the Stephen Perse Foundation in Cambridge, where he oversees an extensive concert program performed by the five choirs and two orchestras that rehearse at school each week. In addition to conducting concerts in the best venues in Cambridge and Ely and the surrounding area, Matthew has led school and consort music tours in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany and Poland.
