Feast Day of Santa Zita Flower Market

Traditional appointment with the flower and sweets market exhibition of Santa Zita, one of the most loved moments of the year by Lucca, returns again this year from 23 to 27 April (9-20 hours) in the historic center of Lucca. Five days that – by Confcommercio and its City of Lucca shopping center – will fill with colors, floral displays and stalls that will find space in piazza Anfiteatro, piazza Scalpellini, piazza San Frediano and via Fillungo. While in the San Frediano and Scalpellini squares there will be gardens set up in collaboration with Opera delle Mura, in Piazza Anfiteatro the protagonists will be 11 horticultural exhibitors from various areas of the province of Lucca, but also from Verbania or in one case from Holland, who will sell and display plants, fruit plants, flowers, seeds, bulbs, chillies and much more. On Monday 24th at 10.30 am the tour of the authorities and inauguration of the event with the choice of the most beautiful and particular counter is scheduled. Every day Unicef ​​presidium with the new charity fishing activity with plants and flowers offered up for grabs by the exhibitors themselves. To celebrate Santa Zita, patron saint of Lucca, the city traditionally sets up an exhibition market in Piazza Anfiteatro in the period of the anniversary of her death, April 27, 1272.

The flowers represent a particularly important episode in the life of Santa Zita. In fact, it is said that the girl, a maid of the rich Fatinelli family from Lucca, was surprised by her owner while she was carrying food to the poor hidden in her apron. Faced with her insistent requests from her, the girl lied saying to bring flowers and plants in her apron and showing her contents truly flowers and plants appeared
