Freedom Week, Festa della Libertà

A week of re-enactments and displays, educational tours and free visits to monuments and museums: this is how Lucca celebrates the Festa della Libertà. The event, a prelude to Lucca Historiae Fest, represents one of the main civic celebrations of the city of Lucca and this year sees a renewed commitment by the municipal administration, which intends to spread its customs, traditions and historical meanings. To do this, the festival will not be limited to the day of the Sunday after Easter, but will be extended to the entire week, from Tuesday 11th to Sunday 16th April, thus becoming Freedom Week.

The program.
The historic city center will be set up with flags and posters that will have the task of reminding everyone, Lucchesi and visitors, of the anniversary. For the citizens of Lucca there will be the possibility, for the first time on this occasion, to visit some of the city’s monuments and museums for free. In particular:

•The Guinigi Tower and the Ore Tower can be visited from Tuesday 12 April to Sunday 16 April from 10.30 to 18.30.

•The free visit to the Botanical Garden can take place from 12 to 14 April, from 10.30 to 18.30, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 April, from 10.30 to 19.30.

•The Puccini birthplace museum, where on 12, 13, 14 April from 18.00 to 20.00, there will be a guided tour, with reservations required (visite@puccinimusem .it; 0583/1900379).

•The cathedral of San Martino is open to free visits for the inhabitants of Lucca from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 15 April from 9.30 to 18.00, Sunday 16 April from 12.00 to 18.00

•The “Boccherini” Conservatory has also joined, with its library which will be open to visitors, again to residents of the municipality, on Wednesday 12 April from 10.00 to 12.00 and Thursday 13 from 16.00 to 18.00.

•The Domus Romana offers guided tours from Friday 14th April to Sunday 16th, at 3.00pm, 4.00pm and 5.00pm.

•The Ancient Mint Museum will be open to visitors on 12 and 14 April, from 9.30 to 12.30 and from 14.00 to 17.00.

On Friday 14 April, in the morning, some first and second grades of lower secondary schools will participate in an educational itinerary lasting approximately two hours inside the San Colombano bulwark, through which students will be able to retrace the history of Lucca, from its birth until the construction of the walls in the sixteenth century.

Saturday 15 April at 16.00, at the barracks of the Baluardo San Frediano, a conference will be held on the flags of Lucca promoted by the group Flag Wavers and Musicians – Contrada Sant’Anna, curated by Virgilio Contrucci.

Sunday 16 April is the highlight of the festival, with the celebrations which include a procession at 10.00 by historical groups (meeting point in Piazza Napoleone).
