Posters, cards, letters, documents, vintage photos and memorabilia that tell 100 years of Italian emigration overseas, a journey made of hopes, fears and successes.
This is what the exhibition proposes, set up at the Palazzo Ducale in Lucca from 13 September to 23 October, entitled ‘Paper ships. One hundred years of Italian emigration overseas’. The title of the exhibition, it is explained, is due to the fact that the exhibition proposes, for the first time, very elaborate posters, in color, designed to invite, even with tempting phrases, together with brochures and brochures, to embark on a great journey to countries where it was possible to find a job and make a fortune. Curated by the journalist and collector Massimo Cutò, with Pietro Luigi Biagioni, director of the Paolo Cresci Foundation, the exhibition is also an opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Paolo Cresci Foundation for the history of Italian emigration.
The president, Ave Marchi, explains that the exhibition “is a precious collection of posters, documents and memorabilia that recount one hundred years of Italian emigration in an ‘immersive’ exhibition which, thanks also to the variety of period films, highlights twenty years of cultural work of the Foundation and to underline that the archival heritage and the heritage of collectors can dialogue and provide captivating opportunities for knowledge and historical-cultural study “. For Biagioni, “the intent of the exhibition is to rediscover a page of our history that has involved over 26 million people on the whole: the exhibition makes it possible to meet a past in which our roots lie.
