Did you know….that the building that is currently being renovated to become a modern gymnasium actually started out as a gymnasium? Built in the 1930s, the Bacchettoni Gym was used by the schools of the historic center and by some local sports clubs especially in the winter months. It was used as a courtroom for a time, but has been officially closed since 2011 awaiting renovations.
Its facade is a true representation of the fascism ascetic, but having been built in the 1930s one should expect nothing less. Fascist architecture is a style popularized in the 1920s and 1930s by the fascist governments of Italy and Germany. It is characterized by its grandiosity, symmetry, and use of traditional materials such as marble and stone. Some other examples of fascist architecture include: The Vittorio Emanuele II Monument in Rome and The Berlin Olympic Stadium which was built for the 1936 Summer Olympics.
Completion of the new gymnasium is set for the summer of 2025.
